Fungal Protection
Buckman has a wide range of products for the protection of hardwood and softwood timber, logs, poles, posts, agricultural, landscape, and construction lumber. The level of protection and inhibition of wood-destroying fungi is influenced by the protective value of the chemical and method of application, as well as the penetration and retention of the preservative on the treated wood surface. Commonly, deterioration of wood can be attributed to mold, sapstain or blue stain, and wood-destroying fungi.
Mold
With sufficient moisture, fungal spores that land on wooden surfaces germinate rapidly. The darkly pigmented spores and mycelia produce a discoloration of the surface that appear as an unsightly, uneven weathering. Buckman fungicides have been developed over many years of intensive study. Many of our products include formulations of several active ingredients for more effective control of fungi.
Sapstain Fungi
Sapstain fungi are somewhat similar to molds in that they do not affect the strength of wood, but rather the appearance and permeability of wood. Unlike molds, however, sapstain fungi not only cause surface discoloration but also discolor the interior of the wood. The color ranges from gray to blue, and sapstain is often referred to as blue stain.
Buckman products are specifically formulated to be retained in the wood, have adequate solution pickup, and provide chemical concentrations that are effective. Buckman sapstain products disperse easily in water to form a stable emulsion. Your Buckman representative will help you to apply the product using your existing equipment.
Wood-Destroying Fungi
These fungi actually attack the wood cells, destroying them and causing weight loss and structural failure. Any evidence of mold or sapstain is indicative of conditions that permit the growth of wood–decaying fungi. Buckman has several products that can assist in preventing wood rot or decay.

Sequestration of Metal Ions
Buckman provides products for sequestering metal ions to ensure brighter lumber and prevent unsightly sapstain discoloration. Our products provide protection against iron tannate stain formation when the lumber is treated in steel tanks or when water with high iron content is used.

Microbiological Control
Buckman has a complete product range available to deal with the cost-effective control of bacteria, algae, and fungi. Our products include both oxidizing and non-oxidizing biocides. We can provide technical advice and expertise on the best biocide for your particular customer application and also assist with providing testing regimes and recommended dose rates and application points on your customer sites. Biocide selection is very specific for the type of microbial deposit and can be selected accordingly.
Corrosion Inhibition
The Buckman product range available for preventing corrosion in process and water systems is large. The product selectivity is dependent on system metallurgy, water chemistry, microbial contaminants, and physical conditions. Your Buckman representative can assist in providing best options targeted towards specific customer systems. Corrosion is generally a result of scale and microbial deposition or incompatible metallurgy in a system. This destructive interrelationship can be controlled by the skillful application of system knowledge and the judicious use of water treatment chemicals.
Inorganic and organic deposit control
Buckman can assist with control of deposits through the use of our range of microbiocides, dispersants, and scale control additives. Our flexible, solutions-oriented approach focuses our extensive resources and experience on your customer performance goals.
Our products can assist you in formulating products to:
- Control calcium and other mineral scale buildup
- Protect against fouling caused by suspended matter
- Maintain clean heat transfer surfaces for increased efficiency
Water Clarification
Buckman has a wide range of coagulants and flocculants to remove suspended solids and color in raw water and wastewater treatment systems. Optimum use of the best product and application point is identified to provide a clean source of water for industrial processes and wastewater disposal.
Buckman also provides defoamers to eliminate troublesome foam and polymers to assist in sludge dewatering.
Reverse Osmosis
Buckman's products are available to protect the integrity and increase the life expectancy of reverse osmosis elements. The products include microbiocides, dispersants, scale inhibitors, and membrane-cleaning formulations to provide the full spectrum of chemicals required to ensure optimum performance of RO systems.
In addition to the above application areas, Buckman can provide support with formulations and products targeted to specific end users. Buckman can work with you to identify system requirements and, where justified, can provide specific formulations.

At Buckman we have eight business management standards we apply to every customer account the world over: communication, system knowledge, planning, safety, program manuals, service and activity reports, business reviews, and continuous improvement. That last one is the end goal for every client, the driving inspiration for everything we do. It's like climbing an endless ladder, one rung at a time, going higher in efficiency, safety, and performance, with an eye always on that next rung.
To help you achieve continuous improvement, we at Buckman are continuously training our own people to provide the leadership you need. In fact, we employ 20 full-time and 75 part-time trainers who teach 200 different courses every year to keep our people ready to help yours.
MAKING THE TRANSITION
The Transition & Service Plan Workshops
New and different can be stressful. Buckman strives to remove the stress of change and replace it with confidence and assurance. We do that through our Transition Workshops. Before we pump one drop of our product into a new client's facility, we bring in our people. We ask questions, consulting not only the managers, but also the operators on the floor, the guys working the docks—everyone who may be affected by a transition to Buckman's chemicals and services. We find out what your expectations are, and only then do we deliver.
Once the transition is complete we turn to the Service Plan Workshop in which we document our interviews, confirm expectations, and determine how you will measure results. We create an in-depth implementation plan. From that plan, we know, going forward, how to avoid problems, meet mutually agreed-upon goals, and pave the way to continuous improvement.
SOLVING PROBLEMS
The Joint Problem-Solving Workshop
Yours is a complex operation that calls for solutions that streamline, simplify, and strengthen. Once again, Buckman turns to its proven workshop format to help solve the difficult problems you face and avoid others before they can occur. Our Joint Problem-Solving Workshop builds consensus between people and establishes a carefully wrought plan for initiating and managing positive change. Once the plan is implemented, the benefits and improvements are traced over time to help measure ROI and ensure continued success.
MEASURING SATISFACTION
The Customer Satisfaction Survey
Satisfaction comes from a job well done. It grows out of achievement and improvement. It is measured both in human, emotional terms and in financial terms. How can we perform 65,000 tests, analyze 10,000 samples, and generate 5,000 problem-solving reports per year?
